Gourmet Birds Destinations, Dates and Details, 2008
SPAIN Spain remains one of favourite destinations, so in June (2nd to 7th, five nights) we return to Castille-Leon. Here the plains hold the biggest population of great bustards anywhere in the world, and they are easy to see. However, as this trip is being run in conjunction with the Hawk and Owl Trust, raptors will be a prime target, and we can be sure to be entertained by the colonies of lesser kestrels nesting in the beautiful old pigeon houses, while Montagu's harriers are another major attraction. In the nearby hills we should find a selection of eagles, plus all those other birds that make spring in Spain so delightful: from hoopoes and golden orioles to bee-eaters and red-rumped swallows. £575 (no SRS). Flights from London-Stansted with Ryanair to Valladolid cost about £50.
